Common reasons couples seek therapy

Every couple is different, as are the struggles they encounter. Couples therapy is a neutral, nonjudgemental approach towards rebuilding the partnership that brought you together from the start.

  • Communication is often at the heart of all relationship issues. Creating a web of negative emotions and heightened conflict. By improving communication, couples become closer. Having more compassion and understanding for one another.

Want to start improving communication today? Check out our article: Healthy Relationship Tips for Stronger Communication.

  • The pillar of any relationship, trust between two people can be won, lost, or rebuilt through one another’s actions.

  • Financial stressors add tremendous strain to a relationship and are a common point of contention. Therapy allows couples to talk through these stressors in a way that supports compassion and understanding. Leading to stronger resolutions.

  • Whether physical or emotional, infidelity can create a deep wound in a relationship. But it does not have to mean the end of the relationship. In fact, 60% - 70% of couples choose to stay together after an affair.

To better understand how to heal the wounds of an affair, see our article: A Path Forward: Rebuilding Trust After Infidelity Through Couples Therapy in Tampa

  • Intimacy often declines over time, impacting both physical and emotional closeness. The Gottman Method for couples therapy brings this to the forefront of marriage counseling, with a focus towards strengthening friendship, intimacy, and partnership.

  • While some level of jealousy is common, excessive jealousy can be a destructive force in a relationship. Couples therapy, as well as therapy in general, can help get to the root of jealousy, and repair it at the source.

  • Past traumas and experiences often take a heavy toll on our relationships. Especially with our partners. But when we understand those deeper patterns about our partner, couples often experience more lasting change. Which is why couples therapy is often combined with trauma-informed therapies, to treat not just the symptoms, but the source.

  • Addiction within a relationship often leads to struggles with trust, finances, anxiety, and more. Whether your relationship is struggling from an active addiction or the pain of a past one, couples therapy is often the next step forward.

When conflict is rooted in deeper patterns

Many couples come to therapy seeking better communication. And that’s important. But sometimes strong reactions, emotional shutdown, or recurring arguments aren’t just about skills — they’re connected to earlier attachment wounds or unresolved experiences on an individual level. When we understand those deeper patterns about our partner, couples often experience more lasting change.
