Every family deserves to feel like home

Families don't struggle because they don't love each other — they struggle because no one taught them how to communicate through the hard stuff. Irene Thompson, LCSW, helps families in South Tampa break those cycles, rebuild trust, and actually enjoy being together again. Conveniently located minutes from Palma Ceia, Hyde Park, Davis Island, and Westshore.

I work with families to build understanding, trust, and improve communication. By understanding their negative patterns and learning new ones, families can reduce conflict and misunderstanding.

Common reasons families seek therapy

Every family is different, as are the struggles they encounter. Family therapy is a neutral, nonjudgemental approach towards rebuilding the relationships that make a family feel like home again.

  • When every conversation turns into a conflict, it's easy to feel like your family is stuck in a loop. Family therapy helps you identify the patterns underneath the arguments — the unmet needs, communication habits, and old wounds that keep pulling everyone back to the same fights. With a neutral space and a skilled guide, families learn to hear each other differently and break the cycle for good.

  • When family members feel more like roommates than relatives, it can be hard to know where the closeness went — or how to get it back. Family therapy creates a space to gently explore what's gotten in the way, whether it's unspoken hurt, busy schedules, or simply drifting apart over time. You don't have to settle for a household that feels disconnected. Reconnection is possible, and it often starts with one honest conversation.

  • Even when the decision is the right one, the impact on a family doesn't end when the relationship does. Family therapy helps everyone — especially children — process the change in a safe, supported way. It's not about saving the marriage. It's about protecting the family that remains, reducing conflict between co-parents, and giving kids a place to make sense of something that can feel like their world turning upside down.

  • Loss has a way of affecting every person in a family differently — and those differences can quietly pull people apart at the exact moment they need each other most. One person withdraws, another wants to talk, and suddenly the grief feels isolating on top of everything else. Family therapy provides a shared space to mourn together, honor what was lost, and support one another through a process that doesn't follow a timeline or a rulebook.

  • A new home, a blended family, a child leaving for college, a job loss — even positive changes can shake a family's sense of stability. Transitions disrupt routines, shift roles, and surface emotions that catch everyone off guard. Family therapy helps your family move through change as a unit, building the communication and flexibility needed to find your footing again on the other side.

  • Addiction doesn't just affect the person struggling — it reshapes the entire family around it. Trust erodes, roles shift, and everyone finds ways to cope that can quietly cause their own damage. Family therapy addresses the full picture: healing relationships strained by addiction, breaking enabling patterns that may have developed over time, and building a home environment that supports lasting recovery for everyone involved.

  • When a child's behavior feels out of control, it's easy for frustration to take over — for everyone. But challenging behavior is almost always communicating something, and family therapy helps decode what that is. Rather than focusing solely on the child, it looks at the full family dynamic to understand what's driving the behavior and what shifts — in communication, boundaries, and connection — can help the whole family respond more effectively.

  • Parenting is hard enough when two people are fully aligned — and most aren't, at least not on everything. Differences in discipline styles, blended family dynamics, and questions about roles and boundaries can create tension that trickles down to the kids. Family therapy helps parents get on the same page, navigate complex family structures with less friction, and build a consistent, secure foundation that children can count on.
