Experience and Therapeutic Approach
Welcome, I’m Dr. Betsy Trahan and I look forward to the opportunity to work with you! I am a licensed clinical psychologist with specialized training in neuropsychology, providing therapy for older adolescents and adults experiencing a wide range of mental health concerns. I also provide assessment services (please see section on assessment specialization for more information).
I have extensive experience treating anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, burnout, and life transitions. I especially enjoy working with high-achieving individuals, professionals, and leaders who may appear to have everything together on the outside but feel overwhelmed, exhausted, disconnected, or stretched too thin by life's demands.
My approach is warm, collaborative, and tailored to your unique needs and goals. I strive to create a supportive, nonjudgmental environment where you feel heard, understood, and empowered to make meaningful, lasting change. Rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach, I integrate evidence-based treatments—including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), and Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT)—to provide care that is both personalized and effective.
Trauma Specialization
I specialize in the assessment and treatment of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and other trauma- and stressor-related disorders. Whether your trauma stems from military service, childhood experiences, sexual assault, a traumatic loss, or another difficult life event, therapy can help you process what you've been through and move toward healing.
I am trained and certified in several evidence-based trauma treatments, including Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Prolonged Exposure (PE), Written Exposure Therapy (WET), and Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT). Together, we'll determine the treatment approach that best aligns with your experiences, goals, and preferences.
As a military veteran and former military psychologist with deployment experience, I bring over a decade of specialized expertise supporting military members, veterans, and their families. At the same time, I welcome clients from all backgrounds and believe that trauma deserves compassionate, individualized care regardless of its source. My goal is to help you make sense of your experiences, develop effective coping skills, and reconnect with the people, values, and activities that matter most to you.
Assessment Specialization
I completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Clinical Neuropsychology at the San Antonio Military Medical Center and have worked as a clinical neuropsychologist in military hospitals and outpatient mental health clinics as well as private practice settings. My experience also includes serving as the Clinical Director of a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) clinic, where I specialized in the evaluation of concussion, TBI, and co-occurring PTSD.
Today, I provide comprehensive adult psychological and neuropsychological evaluations to help clarify diagnoses, better understand cognitive and emotional functioning, and guide personalized treatment recommendations. Currently, I am offering adult Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) evaluations as well as diagnostic evaluations for mood disorders, personality disorders, and PTSD.
About Me
I earned my Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) degree from Pacific University in Oregon and completed my predoctoral internship at Wilford Hall Ambulatory Surgical Center in San Antonio through the U.S. Air Force. I then served as an active-duty Air Force psychologist for more than a decade. During my military career, I provided care in outpatient mental health, primary care, and specialty clinics for all service branches, with additional training and experience in neuropsychological assessment, special duty evaluations, fitness for duty evaluations, and assessment and selection for operational and leadership positions.
On a personal note, my husband and two sons recently relocated to this area, but I am a native Floridian and University of Florida alumni (Go Gators!). For leisure, I enjoy reading, exercising, cooking and baking, swimming in the pool with my kiddos, and watching movies.
